Tomsetts Distribution Invests in Volvo FH Aero to Drive Net Zero Ambitions

Tomsetts Distribution has added six new Volvo FH Aero Globetrotter XL trucks from MC Truck & Bus to its fleet, replacing older models and cutting emissions. Consequently, the investment marks a major step in the Newhaven based haulier’s ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030 and reach Net Zero by 2040, while improving fuel efficiency and driver safety.

The new vehicles replace older FH models, ensuring that 11 of the company’s 18-strong fleet remain Volvo trucks. In doing so, Tomsetts continues to support its target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and Net Zero by 2040.

Andrew Tucknott, Managing Director of Tomsetts Distribution, explained:

“Around 90% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from diesel use, so maximising fleet efficiency is essential. The Volvo FH Aero will deliver real fuel savings and show our customers we are serious about sustainability.”

Aerodynamic Design and Fuel Efficiency

The Volvo FH Aero was chosen for its advanced aerodynamic cab design, which reduces energy consumption and emissions. Each truck is powered by a Euro 6-compliant D13TC Step E engine with turbo compounding technology, delivering 500 hp and 2,800 Nm of torque.

Among the key features are:

• I-Shift 12-speed automated gearbox with I-See predictive cruise control
• Volvo Camera Monitoring System (CMS) replacing wing mirrors for improved aerodynamics and driver visibility
• Enhanced safety with Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Side Collision Avoidance Support, and Driver Alert Support

Comfort and Driver Experience

Inside the Globetrotter XL cabs, drivers benefit from Volvo’s Drive+ package, offering:

• Fully electronic air conditioning with carbon filter
• Leather upholstery and dual armrests
• Heated, suspended driver’s seat
• 33-litre fridge/freezer and microwave
• Ample storage for long-haul convenience

As a result drivers have quickly adapted to the CMS mirror replacement, praising its improved visibility in rain, low light, and direct sunlight.

Backed by Volvo Gold Contract

All six trucks come with a Volvo Gold Contract, covering preventive maintenance and repairs. This ensures complete peace of mind for the operator.

Going forward the FH Aeros will operate from Tomsetts’ East Sussex headquarters, clocking up to 160,000 km annually on local pallet distribution and overnight trunking routes to Palletforce’s Burton-on-Trent hub.
