Ferns Group, who provide reinstatement services across The UK, had a requirement to increase the visibility and reduce the blind spots of their HGV fleet, in keeping with their core values of safety. After joint research for suitable vehicles the Mercedes Econics was chosen. The 8×4 vehicle features fully automatic transmission, rear steer, Epsilon 125 Crane and Thompson body. The cabins are also fitted with on board CCTV. The low entry, high visibility cabs provide an increased field of vision with a key focus on safety.  The trucks have been rated five stars in Transport for London’s Direct Vision Standard, which is based on how much the driver can see directly through their cab windows.

Ferns current specification of grabloaders has been developed over a number of years to suit their operation. The challenge was to integrate this with restricted chassis space on the Econics. This was achieved with the assistance of Thompsons, which enabled keeping the fixed legs of the Epsilon 125 crane and leaving enough room to mount the wacker carrier.

Furthermore Ferns have added a Volvo 12T FL to their fleet, in keeping with their commitment to safety values and improved visibility. Safety features include a lower near side door visibility window, adjustable height full arrest and a 5 camera safety system.

Other specifications on the truck include, Penny lift, 3 insulated tarmac shutes and Euromotive body. The vehicle footprint is very similar to conventional 7.5t tipper but greatly increased flexibility. Taking into account the additional equipment and higher body specification this still provides close to a 40% additional payload.
