Frozen seafood specialist Nortrade has strengthened its delivery fleet with four new Volvo FE 4×2 18-tonne rigids, supplied by MC Truck & Bus.
The new trucks replace vehicles from a rival manufacturer. The decision followed the strong performance of a Volvo FM that Nortrade previously operated.
Based in Hawkhurst, Kent, Nortrade imports seafood from around the world. The company then distributes products to customers across the South of England. As a result, fleet reliability and efficiency are vital to daily operations.

Nortrade based its decision on first hand experience. After adding a Volvo FM to its fleet, the business quickly recognised the benefits. Drivers praised the vehicle’s performance, reliability and comfort. Consequently, Volvo became the natural choice when it was time to renew the wider fleet.
Alan Smith, Director at Nortrade, said “We had a 26-tonne Volvo FM previously which we got mid contract. It was such a good truck compared to the ones we were running from another manufacturer, that it was really a no-brainer to opt for Volvo when it came time to renew the rest of our delivery fleet.”
Lewis Davies, Truck Sales Executive here at MC Truck & Bus, worked closely with the Nortrade team throughout the process. Together, they developed a specification tailored to the company’s exact requirements.
Each Volvo FE has been carefully specified for temperature controlled deliveries. The vehicles feature Gray & Adams insulated bodies and Carrier Transicold Supra HE 8 refrigeration units. Together, these systems help maintain product quality throughout every journey. In addition, Nortrade worked closely with MC Truck & Bus to ensure every aspect of the vehicle met its operational needs.
Smith explained “Lewis helped us with the specification, going through everything in detail from the fridges to the tail lift, to make sure these are absolutely perfect for the job we need them to do.”
Volvo’s D8K Euro 6 engine powers the new vehicles. It produces 320 hp and 1,200 Nm of torque.
The trucks also feature Volvo’s popular 12-speed I-Shift gearbox. This technology improves both fuel efficiency and driveability. Furthermore, the system continuously analyses speed, load and road gradients to select the most effective gear.
As a result, drivers benefit from smoother performance and improved fuel economy.
Key performance features include:
Driver feedback has been extremely positive. Nortrade specified all four vehicles with spacious sleeper cabs. These cabs support regional distribution work and occasional overnight stays. They also include a fixed spring mattress and additional storage space. As a result, drivers enjoy greater comfort during long shifts.
Smith added, “We’ve had the Volvos on the road for a couple of months now. The drivers absolutely love them. They really like the gearbox, which delivers such a smooth ride. They are over the moon.”
Nortrade has protected its investment with a comprehensive Volvo Gold Contract. The agreement covers servicing and maintenance. Therefore, the company can maximise uptime and reduce unexpected downtime.
MC Truck & Bus will carry out all servicing through its depot in Aylesford, Maidstone. Consequently, expert support is always nearby when required. The trucks will cover around 40,000 miles per year. Nortrade expects them to remain in service for approximately six years.
Nortrade has operated as a family run business for more than 40 years. Throughout that time, it has built a reputation for supplying high quality seafood from sustainable sources worldwide.
The four new Volvo FE rigids will help the business continue delivering exceptional service. In addition, they provide greater driver comfort and operational efficiency.
Whether you’re operating in food distribution, logistics or regional deliveries, our team can help you find the right Volvo truck for your operation.
