Volvo Trucks new engine platform delivers more power and lower fuel consumption

The Volvo Trucks new engine platform introduces a new generation of combustion engines designed to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

Volvo Trucks has unveiled two all‑new 13‑litre engines, delivering more power, lower fuel consumption and improved drivability. As a result, operators can benefit from reduced running costs while maintaining strong performance across a wide range of applications.

Built for efficiency and future‑ready fuels

The Volvo Trucks new engine platform has been designed with flexibility in mind. Both engines can run on diesel and a range of alternative fuels, including:

  • Biodiesel (B100)
  • HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil)
  • Biogas (bio‑LNG)
  • Future hydrogen applications

Because of this, operators can adapt to changing fuel availability and environmental targets with confidence. Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, explains:
“These all‑new engines are not only our most fuel‑efficient powertrains ever, but they will also take our combustion engine into the future.”

Up to 4% lower fuel consumption

With a strong focus on fuel efficiency, the Volvo Trucks new engine platform delivers up to 4% lower fuel consumption compared with previous engine generations.*

In addition, when combined with the aerodynamic Volvo FH Aero, total fuel savings can increase even further.

Several new technologies contribute to these gains, including:

  • Refined engine brake performance
  • New cylinder and turbo designs
  • Updated Volvo I‑Shift transmission

Moreover, many diesel variants are compatible with I‑Roll with engine stop/start. This allows the engine to switch off when driving downhill, helping to reduce fuel use and emissions even further.

Strong performance across multiple applications

The Volvo Trucks new engine platform is designed to support a wide range of transport needs. From long‑haul operations to construction and regional distribution, it delivers consistent performance.

Key specifications include:

  • D13 engine: 380–560 hp and up to 2,900 Nm torque
  • G13 gas engine: 420–500 hp and up to 2,800 Nm torque

In addition, the engines meet Euro 6 emissions standards and comply with the latest noise regulations (NNR3). This ensures compliance today while remaining ready for future legislation.

Supporting the transition to lower emissions transport

While electric trucks continue to expand, combustion engines remain essential for many operations. Therefore, improving their efficiency and enabling alternative fuels is a key step in reducing emissions.

The Volvo Trucks new engine platform supports Volvo’s broader strategy towards net‑zero emissions by 2040. This strategy combines:

  • Battery electric trucks
  • Fuel cell electric solutions
  • Combustion engines running on renewable fuels

As a result, operators can choose the right technology for their business while continuing to lower their environmental impact.

Availability and Rollout

The new engines will be introduced across the Volvo FH, FM, FMX and FH Aero model range.

Sales are expected to begin in Q3 2026, with rollout starting in Europe and selected global markets.

At MC Truck & Bus, we are here to support customers as new technologies become available, helping you find the right solution for your operation today and in the future.
