Volvo FH Aero achieves 11.25 mpg across a 477‑mile Commercial Motor test.
Volvo Trucks’ FH Aero has redefined heavy-duty transport efficiency, achieving 11.25 miles per gallon (mpg) in the rigorous Commercial Motor fuel test. This remarkable result surpasses Volvo’s previous record by nearly 1.5 mpg, setting a new benchmark for real-world fuel economy in 44-tonne operations.
Key result: 11.25 mpg over 477 miles of mixed conditions including motorway driving, trunk roads, and steep gradients.
The Commercial Motor route is designed to reflect everyday operations. On day one, the circuit begins in Nuneaton, joining the A5 and heading north on the M6 to Gretna Green, then further into Scotland via challenging regional roads. On day two, the test returns south via the A1, M18, M1, and M69, before finishing back in Nuneaton on the A5.
At defined checkpoints, teams record time, distance, and fuel levels to calculate consumption across different scenarios. Consequently, operators get a clear view of how the truck performs under varied loads and gradients.
Previously, the Volvo FH 460 with I‑Save (2022) led the rankings at 9.82 mpg. This time, the Volvo FH Aero 6×2 Globetrotter XL raised the bar significantly.
“Volvo didn’t just break its own record, it absolutely smashed it,” says Will Shiers, Editor of Commercial Motor. “The FH Aero has proved its fuel‑efficiency credentials and now stands clear at the top of our fuel test rankings.”

Christian Coolsaet, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, comments:
“This result is a testament to Volvo’s commitment to progress and sustainability. The FH Aero represents the next generation of long‑haul transport, combining world-leading efficiency with premium driver comfort and cutting-edge design. Every litre of fuel saved helps reduce emissions, improve fleet performance, and support our customers on their journey to a cleaner, greener future.”
The FH Aero is Volvo’s most streamlined truck to date. Its redesigned cab features:
Together, these elements reduce aerodynamic drag. Thus, air flows more smoothly around the vehicle, improving fuel economy while enhancing stability, cabin quietness, and lower CO₂ emissions.
Paired with Volvo’s advanced I‑Save powertrain, Turbo Compound (TC) engine technology, and the predictive I‑See system, the FH Aero delivers exceptional drivability with minimal fuel consumption. Additionally, operators can choose diesel, electric, or gas variants; all benefit from lower energy use, longer range, and a superior safety and driving experience.
