Volvo FH 460 I-Save Breaks its own Record

October 28, 2022

When it comes to fuel, it’s not just about how much you can save, but how much you can do with every litre. Achieving the perfect balance between fuel savings, driveability and performance is no easy task.

As Volvo Trucks continues on its fuel and carbon reduction journey, we have some exciting news to share with you!

In the Autumn of 2019 Volvo beat the long-standing Commercial Motor fuel record, set previously by Mercedes Benz by just over 22 litres, achieving 9.49mpg – the first truck to go around the route at over 9mpg.

A few weeks ago Volvo Trucks ran the test again – this time using its updated cab with improved aerodynamics and new I-See software. Despite not having as good a run as before with regards to weather and traffic, Volvo beat its own record by another 7.7 litres, achieving a new record of 9.82mpg* whilst also using HVO diesel to reduce emissions.

Their technology is constantly evolving and with further improvements, will continue to chase the elusive 10mpg. When you look back to 1994, the Volvo FH12 420 was the first truck to get 8mpg at 38 tons – it shows how far we’ve come in terms of fuel and technological improvements.

*Commercial Motor (27.10.2022 – volume 238, number 6016) tested the Volvo FH 460 6×2 with I-Save on the Commercial Motor Scottish test route (a representative long-haul test route of 477 miles) and broke its own record on that route by achieving 9.82 mpg at 44 tonnes. Real world fuel performance will vary depending on many factors i.e. driving speed, use of cruise control, vehicle specification, vehicle load, actual topography, the driver’s driving experience, vehicle maintenance, and weather conditions.
